Computer rebuild
31-May-2008
With the release of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP and a new
version of Grisoft's AVG Antivirus, I decided to rebuild my main
desktop computer Dee to get it squeaky
clean and up-to-date with the latest software and drivers. All went
well except for one program.
InterVideo WinDVD 7 had worked
previously but was now fubar with the updated system as it crashed
whenever I tried to play a commercial DVD. And because its DVD
decoder became the default, it also caused Windows Media Player to
crash.
I didn't feel like spending $50+ for the newest version, so I
turned to the free VLC media player.
I tried VLC before on previous computers and experienced a problem
where the mouse would slow to a crawl when VLC was running. That
made me wary, but the cheapskate in me made me set aside any
worries.
I'm thrilled to report that the latest version works fine. The
slow mouse bug has not cropped up and I can
play DVDs in both VLC and WMP without issues. Hurrah for free
software.
