Time travel. Monkey business.
I love sci-fi stories about time travel and especially the
paradoxes and problems that arise from the inevitable tinkering and altering of
events. Twelve Monkeys delivers a heartbreakingly beautiful tale of
a man's journey through different periods in history.
Cole (Bruce Willis) is a sociopathic
convict sent back in time to locate the origins
of a deadly virus that nearly wipes out the entire human population.
He forms a tenuous friendship with a rebellious mental patient named
Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt) and finds an unwitting ally in Dr.
Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe).
This life-threatening and -altering search for the truth sets the tone for a nightmarish vision and exploration of the themes
of destruction, survival, and love. With its bleak outlook,
dark mood, brilliant acting, and unapologetic story, Twelve Monkeys
easily earns its place as my absolute favorite film of all
time.
