Mentally ill retro-porn.
Review: Maniac is a peculiar old movie. It's about a mad scientist
and his assistant who perform Frankenstein-type experiments and who
both suffer from mental illness. Similar to Ed Wood, director
Dwain Esper is known for making movies with an appealing kitsch
quality. Accordingly, Maniac is a low-budget production with bad
(over)acting,
bizarre writing and poor execution.
It's also a laughably bad movie with one unusual quality: it
contains nudity. An interesting development for a film made in 1934
(until I learned that Maniac wasn't shown in traditional
theaters). Other reviews state there are stripping scenes with full
frontal. My DVD (Alpha Video ALP 4002D) must be an edited version as
there is only about one and a half scenes with exposed boobage. I
guess if you need to see some grainy B&W breasts of women who
are probably no longer alive, Maniac may be worth a look.
